TRANSFIGURATION CHURCH

When the bishopric in Temishvar was established in 1728. , the county of Pančevo was made of protoprezviterates and one of the priests was a prior. The Serbs have already had their church on the same place as today. In there were 66 Serbian houses and the priests were called Ostoja and Stoisha. It was qute undersandable that the church was small and unconspicious, because all other churches were alike under the Turkish occupation, and that the congregation were summoned by clapper. After the peace in Belgrade had been signed the Serbs again started to build a church for themselves. It seems that it was finished in a period of two years (1748-1750). This state was completely changed when Turcs conquered Pančevo in 1788. After Turkish conquering they started to renovate the church which was dilapidated in XIX century, and it was decided that it should knocked down and that they should build a new church. The decision for building a new church was brought in 1848 but the foundation stone was constructed only in 1873. ( this year is considered to be the year of today’s Transfiguration Church origin ). The project was made by architect Ivačković and all the works were done by Franjo Erlmajer from Belgrade and Mihailo Tomić from Pančevo. The church was dedicated in December 18th 1878. The tower was 41 m. tall and the church was 36 m. tall and 25,2 m. long and 18,3 m. wide. Neo-Byzantium church style was only the beginning of certain artistic streamings which slowly, but certainly, prepared the union of the Serbs on one side and the joining of the rivers Sava and Danube on the other side. Ivačković is responsible for beeing the first artist who brought the elements of new streamings, which in fact were romantic.
