MOTHER OF GOD ASSUMPTION CHURCH

When the construction for the Assumption Church was licensed a provisional chapel was built first. It was made of boards and had belfry and bell. School was built next to it. The chapel was made of solid material and decorated with icon of St. George(Georgie). It fuctionated since 1810.Karadjordje gave firewood for making the bricks for the church and when archpriest Arsenie thanked him and mentioned Karadjordje as a benefactor he was left without the title. The archbishop didn’t want to give Arsenie the calling and he was sentenced to jail. As the citizens pleaded for his freedom he was released from the tower prison only a year later. The jobs of bricklayers were done by Gasal and Fridrih Kverfeld, who were bricklayers. The job of woodmaker was done by Anton Bohman. First church liturgy was held in August 15th 1810. Construction expenses were 200.000 phorintes. Both belfries cost 34.171,57 phorintes each. But these were not the only expenses. A clock and a bell were set into the tower in1824. Andrea Shnajdinger from Titel was the author of gypsum carving on the altar. Franjo Kne from Boshnani did the frescoes on the walls. Iconostasis and other icons were made by Konstantin Daniel from 1829 until 1832.The church was dedicated in August 15 Th 1832. And in 1836. the interior of the church was finished. In 1845. citizens of Pančevo gave 3990 phorintes for four bells. The church got wealthy gifts from various benefactors. Konstantin Radotić, an architect, projected the towers in 1855. Side doors were built later, two of them were built on western church wall in 1861. Only at the century that followed, in 1928, did Živorad Nastasiević, an academic painter from Belgrade, paint the series of his frescoes.
